A whiteboard is a canvas with no edges. You place things on it, such as text, drawings, images, files, tables and live tasks and boards from your projects, and move them around freely. It is good for planning, mood boards and maps of ideas.
Create a whiteboard#
- Right-click a project in the sidebar, choose New in project, then Whiteboard. You can also click New, then Whiteboard, on Today.
- Type a name in the pane on the right.
- Click Create whiteboard.
Open the project's list, tap +, then tap New whiteboard. The whiteboard is made and opens.
Open the project on the Projects tab, tap +, then tap New WhiteboardNew whiteboard. The whiteboard is made and opens.
On the free Starter plan you can have 3 whiteboards, plus 1 for each project after your first (up to 5).
Know the tools#
The tools are in the row at the top of the whiteboard:
| Tool | Key | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Select | V | Select, move and resize things. |
| Hand | H | Drag the canvas around. |
| Draw | P | Draw freehand. Click it again for the ink options. |
| Eraser | E | Rub out parts of drawings. Click it again to set its size. |
| Text | T | Add text. |
Add opens the list of everything else you can place. Undo and Redo are next to it, and the zoom controls are at the right end of the row.
The tools are in the palette at the bottom of the whiteboard: Select, Hand, Draw, Eraser, Text, Undo, Redo and + to add things. On a narrow whiteboard, Undo and Redo move to the toolbar at the top. On iPhone Duo, all the tools are in the bar at the side of the screen. Tap Draw or Eraser again for their options.

Add text, images and more#
Click Add and choose:
- Write and draw: Text or a Drawing.
- Media: an Image, a Video, a File or a Link… with a preview.
- Blocks: a Table, a Code block, a Quote or a Checkbox.
- From Jotifi: a new Task, Board or Calendar, made in the whiteboard's project.
Tap + in the palette. The two buttons at the top add text and a drawing. Below them are Image, Video, File, Link…, Table, Code BlockCode block, Quote, Checkbox, Task, Board and Calendar.
New things appear in the middle of what you can see. A task, board or calendar on a whiteboard is a real item in the project, so changes show everywhere.
Draw on the canvas#
- Select Draw.
- Select Draw again to open the ink options: Pen, Marker or Pencil, a colour, and Fine, Medium or Bold.
- Draw with your mouse, finger or pen.
Use Eraser to rub out part of a drawing. Drawing, in the add list, makes a separate drawing that you can move around as one piece.
If you use a stylus, such as Apple Pencil, turn on Stylus only in the ink options. Your finger then moves the canvas and only the stylus draws.

- Drag the small bar above it to move it, and the handles on its edges and corners to resize it.
