Tabs let you keep several items open and switch between them. Split view puts two items side by side, and full screen hides everything around the item you are working on. In the Mac and Windows apps, an item can also have a window of its own. Phones have no tabs or split view.

Open an item in a new tab#

On Desktop and Web

Right-click the item in the sidebar or the items column, then choose Open in new tab. The new tab opens beside the others at the top of the window.

To start an empty tab, click + after the last tab or press ⌘TCtrlT. It opens on the Dashboard, with your recently opened items.

On Tablet and Foldable
  1. Touch and hold the item in the list of the project's items.
  2. Tap Open in new tab.

Your open tabs are in the toolbar at the top. When they don't all fit, the toolbar shows the open tab and a button with the number of tabs.

Switch between tabs and close them#

On Desktop and Web
  • Switch: click a tab, or press ⌘1Ctrl1 for Today and ⌘2Ctrl2 to ⌘9Ctrl9 for the tabs after it, in order.
  • More tabs than fit: they go into the + list at the end of the tabs, shown with a number, such as +4.
  • Move: drag a tab to a new place.
  • Close: click the ✕ on the tab, or press ⌘WCtrlW.
  • Reopen the tab you closed last: press ⇧⌘TCtrlShiftT, or choose Reopen closed tab at the bottom of the + list.
On Tablet and Foldable
  • Switch: tap a tab in the toolbar. Where only the open tab shows, tap the button with the number of tabs, then tap a tab in the list.
  • Close: tap the ✕ on the open tab.

Use a tab's menu#

To open a tab's menu, right-click the tabtouch and hold the tab. It has:

  • Close tab, Close other tabs or Close all tabs.
  • Move to split right puts the tab in a second pane beside the first. It shows when the pane has more than one tab. While a split view is open, it reads Add to split view.
  • Copy link copies a link to the tab's item.
  • Show in sidebar brings back the sidebar and the items column, with the tab's project and item selected.
On Desktop

The Mac and Windows apps also have Open tab in new window and Duplicate window.

Shown on an Android foldable; on an iPhone Duo the item's tools sit in a side bar on the right.

Put two items side by side#

On Desktop and Web
  1. Right-click an item and choose Open in split view. You can also click ⋯ in an open item, then Open in split view, or use Move to split right in a tab's menu.
  2. To change the widths, drag the line between the panes.
  3. To work in a pane, click in it.
  4. To close a pane, click ✕ at its top right (Close pane).

A split view shows as one tab at the top of the window, with a part for each pane; the pane you are working in is highlighted. Click another tab to leave the split view, and click the split tab to come back to it. A split view holds up to 4 panes.

  • Show another item in a pane: right-click that pane's part of the split tab (on the highlighted part you can also click its arrow). Choose one of your tabs under Show in this pane, an item under Recent, or Find an item to show here…. The same menu has Open in its own tab and Close pane.
  • End the split view: click ✕ on the split tab (Close split). To keep its items as ordinary tabs, right-click the split symbol at the start of the split tab and choose Separate into tabs.
On Tablet

Split view needs a window at least 1000 points wide, such as a large iPad.

  1. Touch and hold an item and tap Open in split view, or touch and hold a tab and tap Move to split right.
  2. To close a pane, tap ✕ at its top (Close pane).
On Foldable

Split view is not available on foldables: it needs a screen at least 1000 points wide. On an unfolded foldable, the list and the open item already sit on the two halves of the screen. See Foldables and iPhone Duo.

Open an item in its own window#

On Desktop

In the Mac and Windows apps, a note, task, board, calendar, spreadsheet or whiteboard can open in a small window of its own, so you can keep it beside your work.

  • Right-click the item and choose Open in new window.
  • In an open note or spreadsheet, click ⋯, then Open in new window.
  • In a task's pane, press ⇧⌘ReturnCtrlShiftEnter.

The window shows just the item. To turn it into a full Jotifi window, with the sidebar and tabs, click Open in main window at its top.

You can also open a whole tab in a new window: right-click the tab and choose Open tab in new window, or drag the tab out of the window. Duplicate window opens a second window with the same tabs.

On Web

Separate windows are only in the Mac and Windows apps. In the web app, use tabs and split view.

On Tablet and Foldable

On tablets and foldables, items don't open in windows of their own. Use tabs to keep several items open.

Use full screen#

Full screen hides the sidebar, the items column and the tabs, so the item fills the window.

On Desktop and Web
  • Enter: click ⋯ in the item, then Enter full screen, or press ⌃⌘FCtrlShiftF. In a note, Focus in the toolbar does the same.
  • Leave: click Exit full screen at the top left, or press Esc.
On Tablet and Foldable
  • Enter: tap Full screen in the toolbar at the top or in its ⋯ menu. In a note it is called Focus.
  • Leave: tap Exit full screen at the top left.
Shown on an Android foldable; on an iPhone Duo the item's tools sit in a side bar on the right.
